Heathrow Terminal 4 hotels, on the quiet south side of the airport

Hilton London Heathrow Airport, TW6 3AF, is joined to Terminal 4 by a covered walkway, so a guest can go from arrivals to a room without stepping outside. It is a large airport hotel of the older generation, built around a glass atrium, with a restaurant and bar on the ground floor that keep late hours for passengers off the evening flights.

Visitors arrive by car at the hotel's front entrance, not through the terminal. At night the atrium is wide, softly lit and mostly empty. Meeting at the bar is simple; a room visit is simpler still once the number is confirmed. Because this Hilton shares its brand with several other Heathrow hotels, put Terminal 4 in the first line.

Everything else is a short taxi

Terminal 4 has fewer beds on its doorstep than any other terminal. Most T4 passengers who are not at the Hilton sleep in the Bath Road hotels on the northern side or in the Terminal 5 group to the west, and cross by taxi or on the free rail link between terminals. From the south side, the Bath Road is roughly ten minutes by car around the perimeter at night.

The road and rail approach

By car from central London, a companion takes the M4 and the airport perimeter, or comes out along the A4 and the A30 past Hounslow. Late at night that is 45 to 65 minutes from the West End. On rail, the Heathrow Express no longer calls at Terminal 4, so the options are the Elizabeth line branch that ends there or the Piccadilly line, whose trains run a one way loop through Terminal 4 before reaching Terminals 2 and 3. After dark she comes by car.

The south side has one practical advantage. Its road is quieter than the Bath Road at the evening peak, so the time quoted for Terminal 4 tends to hold.

Terminal 4 after the last departures

After the final evening flights leave, the terminal empties fast. Shops close, the check in halls go quiet, and the covered link to the Hilton becomes a calm corridor with a few crews and late passengers walking through it. It is one of the stillest places at Heathrow after midnight, and the hotel feels it: a night manager, a couple of staff on reception, a bar winding down. Guests who want an unhurried evening often find the south side easier than the busier northern hotels.

Late landings from the Gulf and Asia

Plenty of Terminal 4 flights land between late evening and midnight, or leave in the small hours. That shapes the bookings here: fewer dinner dates, more three hour evenings starting after 23:00, and some overnights for guests connecting the following afternoon. The overnight, ten hours at £1,800, is best arranged the day before so her evening is planned around yours.

Send the flight time as well as the hotel. If the landing slips by an hour, the arrival slips with it, at no cost.

Room ready, before she knocks

A short list that saves time at any airport hotel. Room number confirmed and the key card tested. Lifts checked: at the Hilton they may need a key late in the evening, so decide now whether to collect her from the atrium. Boarding pass on the phone and a taxi or alarm booked for the morning. After that, the three hours belong to you rather than to the airport.
