Big houses, big lobbies
The Dorchester, Grosvenor House, the London Hilton on Park Lane, the InterContinental and the Four Seasons each hold hundreds of rooms, and their ground floors run like small towns: restaurants, ballrooms, bars and a steady flow of people. At 22:00 on a weeknight the lobbies are still full of dinner guests leaving. At 01:00 they are hushed but lit and staffed.
Big lobbies reward a simple approach. She walks in through the main doors, past the doormen, and either heads for the lifts or takes a seat within sight of them. Nobody in a hotel this size asks where a well dressed guest is going.
