Terminal 5 hotels at Heathrow: the walkway, Colnbrook and the Longford end

The walkway hotel: Sofitel London Heathrow

The Sofitel is the only hotel physically joined to Terminal 5, through a covered walkway from the terminal building. It is also the largest and grandest of the T5 group, with a tall central atrium, several restaurants and a lobby that stays lit and staffed through the night. For a guest, it means walking from baggage reclaim to a room without once going outdoors.

For a companion, it means a front entrance on the hotel's own approach road, reached by car from the airport perimeter rather than through the terminal. She comes in by the main doors like any late guest. The atrium is open and never empty, so a first drink downstairs is easy if you want one; if not, she comes straight up once the room is confirmed.

Colnbrook: the Hilton outside the fence

Hilton London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 carries the terminal in its name but stands outside the airport boundary in Colnbrook, SL3 0FF, a few minutes from the terminal by hotel bus or taxi. It is a modern block with long, quiet corridors, much calmer than the Sofitel and popular with airline crews and travellers on a short turnaround.

Because it sits by the M25 rather than inside the airport, a companion driving out from town often reaches it slightly sooner than the terminal itself. Give the exact hotel name in the first line: several Hiltons carry Heathrow in their titles, and on the road they are miles apart.

The western Bath Road: Thistle at Longford

Thistle London Heathrow Terminal 5 stands on the Bath Road at Longford, on the north western corner of the airport, a short drive from the terminal. It is a low, spread out hotel of the older airport type, with rooms off wide corridors and parking by the entrance. Some guests prefer exactly that: no atrium, no audience, a few steps from car to door.

Hotels on this stretch are reached by taxi or by the paid hotel bus, never by rail. Allow a few extra minutes in the arrival time here, and say which side of the airport your hotel is on when you write.

Reaching Terminal 5 from town

By road, a companion leaves central London on the M4 and either swings round the M25 to Junction 14 and Airport Way, or crosses along the northern perimeter. Late at night that is 45 to 60 minutes from Kensington or Mayfair, nearer 75 in the Friday rush. By rail, the Heathrow Express from Paddington runs to Terminal 5 as its final stop, some Elizabeth line trains end there, and the Piccadilly line has a Terminal 5 branch of its own. Rail helps in the early evening; after 23:00 she comes by car.

Travel between the terminals is free on the Heathrow Express and the Elizabeth line inside the airport, handy if you land at one terminal and sleep beside another.

Connecting passengers: the border comes first

The Terminal 5 hotels are all landside, which means outside passport control. A passenger in transit who wants a room for the night has to enter the UK to reach one, so check your visa position before booking a hotel between two flights. Once you are through arrivals and checked in, the booking runs exactly as for anyone else: room number, hotel name and booking name on WhatsApp, then a time.

For a long layover spent entirely airside, a hotel visit is not possible. Say so honestly in the first message and the desk will suggest a better plan, such as an evening on the way out or on the way back.

Timing around a British Airways day

Terminal 5 has two busy waves: long haul arrivals from early morning, and the evening departures to Asia and North America. In its hotels the calm stretch usually falls between late evening and the first flights. That is when bookings run most smoothly, with lobbies thinning, lifts empty and no queue at reception. Before a 07:00 flight, a three hour evening that finishes by midnight still leaves a proper night's sleep.
